Here's my attempt at a Milt Gross drawing mixed with Hanna Barbera style painting from the 50's, ala Bob Gentle and Art Lozzi. This is a little exercise John K posted awhile back that I wanted to try. There are a few sloppy areas and the colors look better in person. I have another color version I'll post soon.
My attempt at combining the styles. 4.5" x 10" cel vinyl acrylic on Bristol paper. Scan.

you don't have to post this, but you asked me for comments:
I think you are trying too hard to be flat and graphic
there's more to style than just using flat colors and sponges
you have to be able to control brushes too
I want my bgs to convey warmth and mood
that's partly done by clever colors and value control and also by careful brush techniques and the right choices of techniques. Sponge can't do everything.
I have tons of examples on my blog of what kind of BGs I would like...
keep up the great blog and if you try more styles I'll be glad to take a look!
