Awe-ha-some! Been curious for a while now how you did this. Looks like there's some palette knife in the red/orange?
Thanks, Andy. No palette knife, just a 1" flat brush and the right paint consistency on textured paper. The flatter/more parallel you hold the brush to the paper, the more texture.
Love that texture - it's great to see how you acheive it on your works.
I'll be dropping buy more often here.

Steve, I'm using a sheet of 140lb Canson cold press watercolor paper (from a block) cut down from 6" x 9" to 6" x 6". It does have some decent tooth, and doesn't take much to get a good dry brush texture. It's a little thinner than I'd like and can warp a little if you're not careful.
I just bought some "real" watercolor paper though, some Fabriano 300lb cold press. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm excited to give it a whirl. Has great feeling tooth and is nice and sturdy.

Doesn't the masking tape tear the paper when you pull it up?
No problem! I'd love to see what you come up with. Thanks for the compliment, btw.
I haven't had any trouble with the masking tape. I just peel it up carefully and pull at 45 degrees away from the paper. Decent paper helps. Another method is to stick the tape down to your jeans beforehand to remove some of the tack.
