Latest from Scott Wills

For those of you who have been wondering what Scott's been up to lately, wonder no more!

Besides wrapping up art direction on Monsters vs Aliens, Scott teamed up with Genndy recently to produce a short for CN called 'Maruined'. Scott painted all the final backgrounds himself over an incredibly short span of time... around 50 in about 2 months (on top of his full-time job)! It's uncertain if Maruined will ever air on TV, but Scott sent over a few of his BGs and as you can see, they are absolutely spectacular. Looking at them again, I'm still having difficulty comprehending the brilliant artistry. To say the least, they are like nothing I've seen before. How often can that be said these days?

Before you ask, they were painted mostly by hand (except for the characters and a few digital elements for animation purposes, I believe). Images are Copyright © Cartoon Network.

Thanks for puttin' these up! Have loved the work of all these individuals from Jack for quite some time (as does my kids..Sam Jack is very popular here)

A question for you. Why use the Cel Vinyl paint over reg. acrylic? Am curious as I use multiple media to paint and this one interests me, but the cost is a bit prohibitive to just sample and try...

Hey all, thanks for stopping by! I'm sure Scott will appreciate the support and interest. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see more of these beauties in the future.

Hattermad - Cel vinyl is better for this type of work for several reasons.

1. Self leveling - it flattens out to avoid unwanted build-up of texture

2. Dries matte - no shine to hinder the scanning or photographic processes, nor to distract

3. Opaque - doesn't suffer from the transparency of certain acrylic colors, eliminating the need to do multiple layers of the same color

4. Fast drying

5. Goes on very smooth (like gouache) - different than the friction of acrylic

6. Virtually indestructible

7. Adheres well to any surface - wood, metal, glass, plastic, you name it

If cost is an issue but you want to give it a whirl, why not buy a few different 2 oz squeeze bottles before you commit?
